  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ron Lang -- A fun and interesting read! : I have not read fiction for a bit, but I am glad that I came back to it with this book. I truly enjoyed the story about John Kosko's antics, relationship with his brothers, love interest, and his service. The story is well written. I could envision each scene as the author lays out the twists and turns of the story. It put me in the middle of WWII and reminded me of my grandfather's commitment to the U.S. Navy. Like in the book, my grandfather told me stories about their own illicit card games. It's pretty cool that the author's own grandfather was the inspiration. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jacob See -- A must read! This story isn't just for military buffs : Dave Holcomb has stepped in a new direction, finishing his first novel. This fictional WWII story was unique and not what I expected. Which is a great thing and absolutely loved the direction he went with it. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jacob Hollabaugh -- Engrossing tale of bravery and personal conflict : Been a fan of Dave's two non-fiction endeavors and was very excited to see where he would take his first work of fiction. Happy to report that I was just as engaged and excited by this new story! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Matt P -- Great period piece! : I am always a sucker for period pieces, whether they may be a book, movie, or documentary. A fan of Dave Holcomb's nonfiction work, I had high expectations of his fictional debut and was not disappointed. As a history teacher, I love everything history, so this was a good cross between fiction and what men in combat experienced during WWII. Although a fiction novel, it was clear Holcomb did his research to ensure historical accuracy to the events of the war, which is always a sticking point to those of us that love history when consuming something about history. I'd highly recommend this book to people who love multiple genres including history, military history, and novels. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from S. Mitzel -- An Entertaining & Captivating World War II Story : From the beginning of the story, Dave's characters have a sense of realness to them that allows you to relate to each and every one of them. Dave is an incredible story teller and really hits it out of the park with this World War II story. It was hard to put the book down at times and it was easy to visualize the story as it unfolded. The character development of the Kosko brothers and all the characters in the book was done brilliantly. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tim Higgins -- So many great characters : This book includes many great, well-developed characters, many of which are introduced separately and then cross paths at different points in the story. It has sections from multiple characters' perspectives so you really get to know each of them individually. Instead of just being a summary of WWII, it is a story about three brothers, as well as one heroic woman, where the war serves as a backdrop. Some of the big events like D Day are included, but so are many smaller ones - battles between a couple of Americans and a couple of Germans, characters sneaking out at night for a spy mission, a showdown between a few characters in a house rather than between two entire armies on a battlefield. It has more than enough historical references for the history buffs who love reading about WWII, but also just tells a great story that will be fun to read even for someone who is not as interested in the history. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jessica Applebaum -- Fantastic writing and great story telling : I've never been much of a history or military buff, and I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the book, but I'm so glad I gave it a chance. It's a captivating story with humor and history, and I learned details about the war I didn't know before. I was drawn in from the first chapter where a traumatic event happens right before the main character's eyes. You can almost feel the same cold ocean on your skin, pang in your chest and then relief to find out it was only a dream. I'm not quite finished the book yet, but I'm sure there are many more twists and turns to come. Dave Holcomb is a fantastic writer, develops characters beautifully, and puts you right on the front lines with them. I look forward to reading more. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Hunter Hodies -- Amazing read! : I haven't had a lot of time to read lately due to work and such but I made the time to read this book and it was nothing short of outstanding. Dave wastes no time at all by putting the reader into the action and you could really tell how much he cared for these characters, especially during a very trying time in history. World War II has always fascinated me in many facets so to read a novel like this was a dream come true, honestly. I highly suggest people read this book as Dave really knows how to develop these characters, plus throws some curveballs along the way that some won't see coming. I can't wait to see what he writes next. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2021 )
