I tend to pick up horse-care books from time to time whenever I feel the urge to get back on a saddle. Meredith takes you through each topic with poise and personality, which makes it stand out from many other "how-to" books. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Angel -- Very informative and interesting : I really liked reading this book. I loved how conversational it was. I almost felt like I wasn’t learning. And even though I have no interest in purchasing a horse, it was still intriguing and I never got bored, and the facts were very interesting. Any time I had a question from something I read, it was immediately answered in the following paragraph. Even though some of it felt repetitive, I feel like it wasn’t unneeded because it is a serious decision. The author made sure the reader acknowledged what someone would be getting into with purchasing a horse, but still always encouraged instead of putting down. The only things that I wish were expanded were some of the illnesses horses I get, but it’s understandable that even though one should be aware of them, you wouldn’t really need detailed information before purchasing. The work was fluid and I never had trouble understanding the terms, even though I’m not familiar with horse terms, because they were always discussed. I did appreciate the questions being at the end so that if you did need to use the information as a guide the reader doesn’t have to hunt through the text. The author was very thorough while still making it easy and enjoyable to read. I also appreciated the direction to other sources, if further information was needed and made it clear that every horse was different. This book gracefully walks the reader through all the necessary steps, outlining things from what to feed your horse to how to clean the stalls. A lot more preparation goes into owning a horse than I thought, and I now understand that it is a big responsibility, but one that comes with a great reward. This book is straightforward, easy to read, and a great resource for anyone who is interested in owning a horse or is a first-time horse owner. Her pitch is even and doesn’t distort what she’s reading. She managed to deliver the information and sound lively, something other narrators can struggle with when it’s a book such as this full of information. The book itself was full of so much information. I can’t believe how much attention and energy will go into owning a horse but I can’t wait and am glad I found this book.
